History and Heritage

Having been raised in a children’s home in the UK, Isha left school at the age of sixteen with 3 O’levels. She returned to education at the age of thirty and gained a Batchelor of Social Science Honors Degree. During this period she realized there was a lack of focus on black issues and the developing world. She became interested in discovering her African Caribbean heritage and black history. This research led her to the discovery of her Trinidadian family and her father’s roots. A book (In Search of Mr. McKenzie) about this discovery was co-authored with her sister Thelma Perkins. The discovery filled in the missing bits of Isha’s black heritage and her identity as a mixed heritage woman with dual nationality. Isha gained her MA in Applied Psychoanalytical Theory in 1979. She carried out a study on the experiences of black women shared through poetry. Her Doctorate study completed in 2005 was developed by responding to the needs of trainee counsellors, who were concerned about lack of discussion about black issues. Isha now works as a part time lecturer and runs a private practice offering psychotherapy, counselling, supervision and consultancy.
